The Striking Calamity -

The explanation of the word of Allah — exalted is His praise, hallowed are His names: الْقَارِعَةُ (1)
Allah — exalted is His remembrance — says: al-Qāriʿa (the Striker): the Hour that strikes the hearts of people with its terror and with the tremendous affliction (balāʾ) that befalls them thereby. That is the morning after which no night follows.
In accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes of the Qurʾān (ahl al-taʾwīl) likewise spoke.

ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning the word al-Qāriʿa : it is one of the names of the Day of Resurrection (yawm al-qiyāma); Allah has exalted it and has warned His servants of it.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning the word الْقَارِعَةُ * مَا الْقَارِعَةُ — he said: that is the Hour (al-Sāʿa).
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word الْقَارِعَةُ * مَا الْقَارِعَةُ — he said: that is the Hour.
Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Wakīʿ related to us, saying: I heard that al-Qāriʿa, al-Wāqiʿa, and al-Ḥāqqa all three mean the Resurrection (al-qiyāma).
