    Discussion of the explanation of the words of the Exalted:

(O mankind, there has come to you an admonition from your Lord, and a healing for what is in the breasts, and guidance and mercy for the believers.)

Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted — blessed be His praise — says to His creation: يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُمْ مَوْعِظَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ — that is to say: a reminder (dhikrā) that reminds you of the punishment (ʿadhāb) of Allah and makes you fear the threat of His punishment — مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ — that is to say: coming from your Lord. The Prophet ﷺ did not himself invent it, and no one has falsified it, such that you might say: "We are not certain that it is reliable." What the Exalted — blessed be His praise — means by it is the Qurʾān; and that is the admonition of Allah.

And as for His words: وَشِفَاءٌ لِمَا فِي الصُّدُورِ — that is to say: a remedy for what is in the breasts of ignorance. By it Allah heals the ignorance of the ignorant: through it He cures their ailment, and through it He guides whom He wishes among His creation to guide. وَهُدًى — that is to say: and it is an exposition of what Allah has permitted and what He has forbidden, and a proof for what is obedience and what is disobedience. وَرَحْمَةٌ — by which He is merciful toward whom He wills among His creation: through it He saves him from misguidance unto guidance, and through it He delivers him from ruin and destruction. And He — blessed and Exalted — has made it a mercy for the believers in it, and not for the unbelievers in it — for whoever disbelieves in it, to his sight it is a blindness, and his recompense in the Hereafter for disbelief in it is the everlasting abode in the blazing Fire (laẓā).
