And they say, "When is [the fulfillment of] this promise, if you should be truthful?"

The discourse on the explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَى هَذَا الْوَعْدُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ (And they say: "When will this promise come, if you are truthful?") (48)
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah the Exalted — great is His praise — says to His Prophet ﷺ: And these polytheists (mushrikīn) from your people, O Muḥammad, say: "When will this promise come (متى هذا الوعد)" — which you make to us, that it will come to us from the side of Allah? And that is the establishment of the Hour — "if you are truthful (إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ)" — you and whoever follows you — in what you promise us concerning that.
