Tafseer of Jonas · Yunus · 10:45
And on the Day when He will gather them, [it will be] as if they had not remained [in the world] but an hour of the day, [and] they will know each other. Those will have lost who denied the meeting with Allah and were not guided

The explanation of the word of the Exalted: وَيَوْمَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ كَأَنْ لَمْ يَلْبَثُوا إِلا سَاعَةً مِنَ النَّهَارِ يَتَعَارَفُونَ بَيْنَهُمْ قَدْ خَسِرَ الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِلِقَاءِ اللَّهِ وَمَا كَانُوا مُهْتَدِينَ (45)
(And on the Day when He gathers them together, it will be as if they had tarried but an hour of the day; they will recognize one another. Truly lost are those who denied the meeting with Allah, and they were not rightly guided.)
Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah — exalted be His remembrance — says: And on the Day when We gather these polytheists (mushrikīn) together and assemble them at the standing-place of the reckoning, it will be as if before that they had tarried but an hour of the day, while they recognize one another mutually — then the recognition is severed and that hour comes to an end. Allah then says: قَدْ خَسِرَ الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِلِقَاءِ اللَّهِ وَمَا كَانُوا مُهْتَدِينَ — lost are those who denied the reward of Allah and His punishment (ʿadhāb), and their shares in the good, and they have been ruined. وَمَا كَانُوا مُهْتَدِينَ — that is to say: they were not guided to attaining the right path in what they did, namely their denial of the meeting with Allah, for that earned them what they cannot withstand of the punishment of Allah.
