The explanation of the words of Allah, the Exalted: إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَظْلِمُ النَّاسَ شَيْئًا وَلَكِنَّ النَّاسَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ (44) (Indeed, Allah does no wrong to mankind in anything, but rather mankind wrongs themselves.)
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah, the Exalted, says thereby: Allah does not do to His creation anything they do not deserve — He punishes them only on account of their disobedience to Him, and He torments them only on account of their disbelief (kufr) in Him. "But rather mankind" — that is to say: but rather mankind are the ones who wrong themselves, in that they perpetrate what brings down upon them the wrath of Allah and His indignation.
This is an announcement from Allah, the Exalted, to His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ and to those who believe in him: that He did not take faith (īmān) away from those people — concerning whom He, glorious be His praise, has reported that they will not believe — on His own initiative, without there having been a prior offense on their part. And it is an announcement that He deprived them of it only on the basis of their having deserved that it be taken from them, on account of the sins they had committed against themselves — so that the word of their Lord against them was fulfilled and their hearts were sealed.
