And it was not [possible] for this Qur'an to be produced by other than Allah, but [it is] a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of the [former] Scripture, about which there is no doubt, from the Lord of the worlds.

The discussion of the explanation of the word of Allah, the Exalted: وَمَا كَانَ هَذَا الْقُرْآنُ أَنْ يُفْتَرَى مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ وَلَكِنْ تَصْدِيقَ الَّذِي بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ وَتَفْصِيلَ الْكِتَابِ لا رَيْبَ فِيهِ مِنْ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ (37) (And this Qurʾān is not such that it could be invented apart from Allah, but it is a confirmation of what came before it, and an exposition of the Book — concerning which there is no doubt — from the Lord of the Worlds.)
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah, whose renown is exalted, says: It does not befit this Qurʾān that it should be invented apart from Allah — that is to say: it does not befit it that anyone should invent it from someone other than Allah. This is like His word: وَمَا كَانَ لِنَبِيٍّ أَنْ يَغُلَّ [Surah Āl ʿImrān (3:161)], with the meaning: it does not befit a prophet that his companions should deceive him.
This is merely an announcement from Allah, whose praise is exalted, that this Qurʾān comes from Him — He sent it down to His servant Muḥammad — and a refutation of the polytheists (mushrikīn) who said: "It is poetry and soothsaying," and of those who said: "Muḥammad merely learns it from Yaḥnīs the Roman."
Allah, whose praise is exalted, says to them: This Qurʾān is not such that anyone could invent it from someone other than Allah, for none of creation is capable of that. (But it is a confirmation of what came before it) — that is to say: Allah, whose renown is exalted, says: but it comes from Allah, Who sent it down as a confirmation of what came before it, that is to say: of the Scriptures that were revealed before it to the prophets of Allah, such as the Torah and the Gospel and other Books of Allah that He sent down to His prophets. (And an exposition of the Book) — that is to say: and an explanation of the Book that Allah has imposed as an obligation upon the community of Muḥammad ﷺ, and the obligations that He prescribed for them in His prior knowledge. He says: (There is no doubt in it) — there is no doubt in it that it is a confirmation of what came before it of the Book, and an exposition of the Book from the side of the Lord of the Worlds — not an invention from another and not a fabrication.
