The explanation of the words of Allah the Exalted: وَاتَّبِعْ مَا يُوحَى إِلَيْكَ وَاصْبِرْ حَتَّى يَحْكُمَ اللَّهُ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ الْحَاكِمِينَ (And follow that which is revealed to you, and be patient until Allah judges, and He is the best of judges) (109)
Abū Jaʿfar says: Allah the Exalted says: Follow, O Muḥammad, the revelation of Allah which He reveals to you, and the sending-down which He causes to descend upon you; act in accordance with it. And be patient in the face of the harm and torments inflicted upon you in the way of Allah by the polytheists (mushrikīn) of your people, and in the face of what they have done to you — until Allah carries out His decree concerning them and concerning you with a decisive act. وَهُوَ خَيْرُ الْحَاكِمِينَ — He says: He is the best of judges and the most just of those who decide. Allah — glorified be His praise — then judged between him and them on the Day of Badr: He killed them with the sword, and commanded His Prophet ﷺ concerning those of them who remained, that he should deal with them in the same way as with those who had been destroyed, or that they should repent and return to His obedience. This is shown by the following:
17914 — Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning the words of Allah: وَمَا أَنْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِوَكِيلٍ وَاصْبِرْ حَتَّى يَحْكُمَ اللَّهُ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ الْحَاكِمِينَ — he said: "This is abrogated (mansūkh); 'until Allah judges': Allah has judged that they were to be fought (jihād), and commanded that they be dealt with harshly."
