The explanation of the saying of the Exalted — exalted is His majesty and hallowed are His names —: جَزَاؤُهُمْ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّاتُ عَدْنٍ تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ خَشِيَ رَبَّهُ (8) (Their reward with their Lord is the Gardens of ʿAdn beneath which the rivers flow, abiding therein eternally and forever. Allah is well pleased with them and they are well pleased with Him. That is for whoever fears his Lord.)

The Exalted — mentioned be His remembrance — says: the reward of those who have believed and done righteous deeds is with their Lord on the Day of Resurrection ( جَنَّاتُ عَدْنٍ ) (Gardens of ʿAdn), by which are meant gardens of abode in which there is no departure, beneath whose trees the rivers flow ( خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا ) (abiding therein eternally and forever). He says: they abide therein forever, they do not leave it and they do not die therein.

( رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ ) (Allah is well pleased with them) on account of that in which they obeyed Him in the worldly life, and on account of that which they performed therein for the sake of their deliverance from His punishment.

( وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ ) (and they are well pleased with Him) on account of that which He bestowed upon them on that Day of reward, for their obedience to their Lord in the worldly life, and of honor with which He rewarded them for that.

And His saying: ( ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ خَشِيَ رَبَّهُ ) (That is for whoever fears his Lord).

The Exalted — mentioned be His remembrance — says: this good which I have described and which I have promised to those who have believed and done righteous deeds on the Day of Resurrection, is for whoever fears his Lord. He says: for whoever has feared Allah in the worldly life, in secret and in public, and has thus feared Him by fulfilling His obligatory ordinances and avoiding acts of disobedience to Him. And with Allah lies success.
