And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.

The statement concerning the interpretation of His word, the Exalted: ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ (17) ("Then he was among those who believed and enjoined one another to patience and enjoined one another to compassion").
The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: then this one who said أَهْلَكْتُ مَالا لُبَدًا ("I have squandered an immense fortune") was among those who believed in Allah and His Messenger, so that he believes along with them just as they believed. وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ ("and enjoined one another to patience") — He says: and [they were] among those who enjoined one another to patience regarding what befell them for the sake of Allah. وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ ("and enjoined one another to compassion") — He says: and they enjoined one another to compassion.
As Muḥammad ibn Sinān and al-Qazzāz related to us, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, on the authority of Shabīb, on the authority of ʿIkrima, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ . He said: compassion toward the people.
