The statement concerning the explanation of His saying: وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ عَاهَدَ اللَّهَ لَئِنْ آتَانَا مِنْ فَضْلِهِ لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ وَلَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ (9:75) (And among them is he who has made a covenant with Allah: "If He gives us of His bounty, we will surely give alms and we will surely be among the righteous.")
Abū Jaʿfar [al-Ṭabarī] said: The Exalted, whose praise is mentioned, says: And among these hypocrites (munāfiqīn) whose character I have described to you, O Muḥammad ﷺ, is = مَنْ عَاهَدَ اللَّهَ ("he who has made a covenant with Allah"), that is to say: he gave Allah a promise = لَئِنْ آتَانَا مِنْ فَضْلِهِ ("if He gives us of His bounty"), that is to say: if Allah gives us of His bounty and apportions wealth to us and makes it ample for us from Himself = لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ ("we will surely give alms"), that is to say: then we will surely pay the alms (ṣadaqa) out of that wealth which our Lord has apportioned to us = وَلَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ ("and we will surely be among the righteous"), that is to say: and then we will surely act therewith according to the conduct of the people of righteousness with their wealth: by maintaining the ties of kinship therewith and by spending it in the way of Allah.
