The statement concerning the explanation of His saying: "Allah has promised the hypocrites, men and women (al-munāfiqīn wa-l-munāfiqāt), and the unbelievers (al-kuffār) the fire of Hell (jahannam), abiding therein forever; that is sufficient for them, and Allah has cursed them, and for them there is a lasting punishment (ʿadhāb)" (9:68).
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: "Allah has promised the hypocrites, men and women, and the unbelievers" in Allah = "the fire of Hell" [He has promised], that He will cause them all together to burn therein = "abiding therein forever". He says: dwelling therein for all eternity; they neither live therein nor die therein = "that is sufficient for them". He says: that [fire] is enough for them as punishment and recompense for their unbelief in Allah = "and Allah has cursed them". He says: and Allah has removed them and driven them far away from His mercy = "and for them there is a lasting punishment". He says: and for both groups together — that is to say: of the people of hypocrisy (nifāq) and unbelief (kufr) — there is with Allah = "a lasting punishment", continuous, which does not cease and does not perish.
