They swear by Allah to you [Muslims] to satisfy you. But Allah and His Messenger are more worthy for them to satisfy, if they should be believers.

The explanation of His statement: يَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ لَكُمْ لِيُرْضُوكُمْ وَاللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَحَقُّ أَنْ يُرْضُوهُ إِنْ كَانُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ (62) (They swear to you by Allah in order to please you, while Allah and His Messenger have more right that they should please Him, if they are believers. (62))
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says to those who believe in Him and in His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: These hypocrites (munāfiqūn) swear to you by Allah, O believers, in order to please you concerning that which has reached you about them regarding their harming of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and their mentioning of him with vilification against him and slander about him, and their secret conspiring with the partisans of unbelief against you = by Allah and with false oaths: that they did not do that, and that they truly adhere to your religion and are with you against whoever turns against you, and they thereby seek your satisfaction. Allah, exalted be His praise, says: (while Allah and His Messenger have more right that they should please Him), through repentance and turning back concerning what they have said and uttered = (if they are believers). He says: if they hold the Oneness of Allah to be true and acknowledge His promise and His threat.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
16906 – Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: (They swear to you by Allah in order to please you), the āyah. It was mentioned to us that a man of the hypocrites said: "By Allah, these are indeed our best and our noble ones, and if what Muḥammad says is true, then they are worse than donkeys!" He said: A man of the Muslims heard that and said: "By Allah, what Muḥammad says is true, and you are indeed worse than the donkey!" The man brought this to the Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who sent for the man and summoned him and said to him: "What led you to say what you said?" Thereupon he began cursing himself and swearing by Allah that he had not said that. And the Muslim man began saying: "O Allah, confirm the truthful one and declare the liar a liar!" Then Allah revealed concerning that: (They swear to you by Allah in order to please you, while Allah and His Messenger have more right that they should please Him, if they are believers).
