The explanation of His statement: ثُمَّ يَتُوبُ اللَّهُ مِنْ بَعْدِ ذَلِكَ عَلَى مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ (9:27) (Then Allah accepts thereafter the repentant return of whom He wills, and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.)
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: Then Allah bestows His favor by granting to someone the mercy of repentance (tawba) and return to Him, after the punishment with which He has chastised those among them who were killed and perished by the sword. "Of whom He wills," that is to say: Allah accepts the repentant return of whom He wills among the living, and brings him to His obedience. "And Allah is Forgiving (ghafūr)" of the sins of whoever among them or among others returns to Him and shows repentance, "Merciful (raḥīm)" toward them, so that He does not punish them after their repentance, and does not call them to account for it after their return.
