And His word ( وَذَكَرَ اسْمَ رَبِّهِ فَصَلَّى , "and remembers the name of his Lord and then prays"). The exegetes of the Qurʾān (ahl al-taʾwīl) differ concerning the interpretation of His word ( وَذَكَرَ اسْمَ رَبِّهِ فَصَلَّى ). Some of them said: its meaning is: he professed Allah as One (waḥḥada llāha).

    * Mention of those who said that:

ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning ( وَذَكَرَ اسْمَ رَبِّهِ فَصَلَّى ): he says: he professed Allah, glorious and exalted is He, as One.

And others said: no, rather its meaning is: he remembered Allah, called upon Him, and longed for Him.

And the correct view concerning this is to say: he remembered Allah and professed Him as One, called upon Him, and longed for Him; for all of this belongs to the remembrance of Allah, and Allah, the Exalted, has not singled out any one kind of His remembrance above another kind.

And His word ( فَصَلَّى , "and then prayed"). The exegetes of the Qurʾān differ concerning its interpretation. Some of them said: by it is meant: and he performed the five prayers.

    * Mention of those who said that:

ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word ( فَصَلَّى ): he says: he performed the five prayers.

And others said: by it is meant: the festival prayer on the Day of Breaking the Fast (ṣalāt al-ʿīd yawm al-fiṭr).

And yet others said: no, by it is meant: and he remembered the name of his Lord and called [upon Him]; and they said: the prayer (al-ṣalāh) here means: the supplication (al-duʿāʾ).

And the correct view is to say: by His word ( فَصَلَّى ) are meant: the prayers, in which he remembered Allah with praise, glorification, and supplication.
