Tafseer of The Morning Star · At-Taariq · 86:12
And [by] the earth which cracks open,

And His statement: ( وَالأرْضِ ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِ — "and by the earth that splits open"). The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: and by the earth that splits open with vegetation.
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the scholars of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.
* Mention of those who said that:
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, he said: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Khaṣīf, on the authority of ʿIkrima, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: ( وَالأرْضِ ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِ ) he said: that of vegetation.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, he said: my father related to me, he said: my uncle related to me, he said: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: ( وَالأرْضِ ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِ ) — he says: its splitting is the bringing forth of the vegetation in every year.
Yaʿqūb related to me, he said: Ibn ʿUlayya related to us, on the authority of Abū Rajāʾ, on the authority of al-Ḥasan: ( وَالأرْضِ ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِ ) he said: it splits open over what lies beneath it. Abū Rajāʾ said: and ʿIkrima was asked about it, whereupon he said: it splits open over sustenance.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, he said: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, he said: al-Ḥasan related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, Mujāhid said: ( وَالأرْضِ ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِ ) — like the mountain pass, the mountain pass of Minā.
Al-Ḥārith related to me, he said: al-Ḥasan related to us, he said: Warqāʾ related to us, both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid: ( وَالأرْضِ ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِ ) he said: the cleft is like the mountain pass, other than the valleys and other than the steep bank.
Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: ( وَالأرْضِ ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِ ) — it splits open over the fruits and over the vegetation, as you have seen.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda: ( وَالأرْضِ ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِ ) he said: it splits open over the vegetation.
Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement: ( وَالأرْضِ ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِ ), and he recited: ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا الأَرْضَ شَقًّا * فَأَنْبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا * وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا ("Then We split the earth open completely, and We caused grain to grow therein, and grapes and fodder") (80:26-28) until the end of the verse; he said: its splitting is for agriculture.
It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, he said: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd informed us, he said: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning His statement: ( وَالأرْضِ ذَاتِ الصَّدْعِ ) — the vegetation.
