And when Paradise is brought near,
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
His statement: وَإِذَا الْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ ("And when Paradise (janna) is brought near"). The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: and when Paradise (janna) is brought close and is approached.
And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the expounders of the Scripture have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Abū Yaʿlā, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ ibn Khuthaym, concerning: وَإِذَا الْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ * وَإِذَا الْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ ("And when the Hellfire (al-jaḥīm) is kindled, and when Paradise (janna) is brought near"), he said: to these two the whole account is directed: a group in Paradise, and a group in the blazing Flame (al-saʿīr).
Ibn Ḥumayd related to me, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Abū Yaʿlā, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ, concerning: وَإِذَا الْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ * وَإِذَا الْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ ("And when the Hellfire is kindled, and when Paradise is brought near"), he said: to these two the whole account is directed: a group to Paradise, and a group to the Fire. By his statement "to these two the whole account is directed," al-Rabīʿ means that the beginning of the announcement — إِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ ("When the sun is wound round") up to His word: وَإِذَا الْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ ("and when the Hellfire is kindled") — is merely an enumeration of the events that will take place, the end of which is one of these two things, and that is the final destination: either to Paradise, or to the Fire.
