His statement: وَإِذَا الصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ ("And when the pages are spread open") — He, exalted is His mention, says: and when the pages containing the deeds of the servants are spread open before them, after they had been rolled up over the good and evil deeds written therein.

And in accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word: وَإِذَا الصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ ("And when the pages are spread open"): your page, O son of Ādam, is filled with what is in it, then it is rolled up, then it is spread open before you on the Day of Resurrection.

The reciters (al-qurrāʾ) differed over the reading of it. Most of the reciters of Medina read it نُشِرتْ (nushirat) with a light (unstrengthened) shīn, and so likewise some of the Kūfans read it. And some of the reciters of Mecca and most of the reciters of Kūfa read it with a strengthened (doubled) shīn (nushshirat). The one among them who justified his reading in this manner relied upon the word of Allah: أَنْ يُؤْتَى صُحُفًا مُنَشَّرَةً ("that he be given pages spread open"), and He did not say "manshūra"; and the doubling here was deemed fitting only because it concerns a report about a multitude, just as one says: "these are slaughtered (mudhabbaḥa) rams"; and if one were to report about a single one of them, it would be unstrengthened and one would say "madhbūḥa." Likewise applies to His word "manshūra."
