From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;

Then He, exalted be His praise, clarified that from which He created him, and said: مِنْ نُطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ ("From a drop He created him and determined him") (80:19). He determined his states: at one time as a drop (nuṭfa), then as a blood-clot (ʿalaqa), then as a lump of flesh (muḍgha), until his successive states had run their full course through him, while he was in the womb of his mother.
