Tabari

Tafseer of The Spoils of War · Al-Anfaal · 8:74

But those who have believed and emigrated and fought in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided - it is they who are the believers, truly. For them is forgiveness and noble provision.

The statement concerning the explanation of His saying: (74) (And those who believed and emigrated and strove (jāhadū) in the path of Allah, and those who gave shelter and helped — they are truly the believers; for them is forgiveness and a noble provision. (74))

Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: (And those who believed and emigrated and strove in the path of Allah, and those who gave shelter and helped) — they gave shelter to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and to the emigrants with him, and they helped them, and they aided the religion of Allah. They are truly the people of faith (īmān) in Allah and His Messenger — not the one who believed but did not emigrate from the land of shirk, and remained dwelling amid the people of shirk, and did not go forth to fight alongside the Muslims against their enemy. = (for them is forgiveness) — He says: for them is Allah's covering over their sins, in that He pardons them for them. = (and a noble provision) — He says: for them in the Garden (janna) is food and drink, pleasant and noble, which does not change within their bowels so as to become excrement, but exudes like the exuding of musk.

And this āya bears witness to the soundness of what we have said: that the meaning of Allah's saying بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ (some of them are protectors of others) in this āya, and His saying مَا لَكُمْ مِنْ وَلايَتِهِمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ (you have no part in their guardianship), is nothing other than support and help, not inheritance (mīrāth). For He, whose praise is exalted, made follow upon it the praise of the emigrants (muhājirūn) and the helpers (anṣār) and the announcement of what they have with Him — not of the one who did not emigrate — with His saying: (And those who believed and emigrated and strove in the path of Allah, and those who gave shelter and helped), the āya. And had what was intended by the āyāt before it been the indication of the ruling concerning their inheritance, then nothing would have followed upon it except the exhortation to carry out the inheritance as He had commanded. And in the soundness of that, in that manner, lies the clear proof that in these āyāt there is nothing abrogating (nāsikh) and nothing abrogated (mansūkh).
