The discourse on the explanation of the saying of the Exalted: "Have We not made the earth a resting-place?" (78:6).
The Exalted — may His mention be praised — enumerates to these polytheists (mushrikīn) His favors and His blessings upon them, and His goodness toward them, as well as their ingratitude for what He has bestowed upon them, and He threatens them with what He has prepared for them when they arrive before Him: the various kinds of His punishment and His painful torment (ʿadhāb). Thus He said to them: "Have We not made the earth" for you "a resting-place," upon which you can stretch yourselves out and which you use as a bed.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Saʿīd, on the authority of Qatāda: "Have We not made the earth a resting-place?" — that is to say: a spread-out carpet.
