The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: لِنُخْرِجَ بِهِ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا ("That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation") (78:15).
The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: that We may, by means of the water which We send down upon the earth from the rain-clouds, bring forth grain. And the grain (ḥabb) is everything that is enclosed within the ears of the crop that is harvested; it is the plural of ḥabba (a grain-kernel), just as shaʿīr (barley) is the plural of shaʿīra (a barley-grain), and just as tamr (dates) is the plural of tamra (a single date). As for the vegetation (nabāt): that is the green pasturage which is grazed, consisting of grass and field-crops.
