Tafseer of The Announcement · An-Naba · 78:13

وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًۭا وَهَّاجًۭا

And made [therein] a burning lamp

    And His statement: "And We have made a brightly burning lamp." The Exalted — may His mention be praised — says: and We have made a lamp; by "the lamp" He means the sun. And His statement "brightly burning" means: blazing and radiantly giving light.

    In accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes of the tafsīr also spoke.

    * Mention of those who said that:

    ʿAlī related to me, he said: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, he said: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement: "And We have made a brightly burning lamp," he says: radiant.

    Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, he said: my father related to me, he said: my uncle related to me, he said: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: "And We have made a brightly burning lamp," he says: an illuminating lamp.

    Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, he said: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, he said: al-Ḥasan related to us, he said: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His statement: "a brightly burning lamp," he said: which sparkles and gleams.

    Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, he said: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda: "a brightly burning lamp," he said: the "brightly burning" is the illuminating.

    Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, he said: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān: "a brightly burning lamp," he said: whose light sparkles and gleams.

    وقوله: (وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا) يقول تعالى ذكره: وجعلنا سراجا، يعني بالسراج: الشمس وقوله: (وَهَّاجًا) يعني: وقادا مضيئا. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني عليّ، قال: ثنا أبو صالح، قال: ثني معاوية، عن عليّ، عن ابن عباس، في قوله: (وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا) يقول: مضيئا. حدثني محمد بن سعد، قال: ثني أبي، قال: ثني عمي، قال: ثني أبي، عن أبيه، عن ابن عباس (وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا) يقول: سراجا منيرا. حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى، وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء، جميعا عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد، قوله: (سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا) قال: يتلألأ. حدثنا ابن عبد الأعلى، قال: ثنا ابن ثور، عن معمر، عن قتادة (سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا) قال: الوهاح: المنير. حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا مهران، عن سفيان (سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا) قال: يتلألأ ضوءه.
