وَجَعَلْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ شَٰمِخَٰتٍۢ وَأَسْقَيْنَٰكُم مَّآءًۭ فُرَاتًۭا

And We placed therein lofty, firmly set mountains and have given you to drink sweet water.

    And His word: ( وَجَعَلْنَا فِيهَا رَوَاسِيَ شَامِخَاتٍ ) "and We placed therein firmly anchored, towering mountains". The Exalted, whose mention is high, says: and We placed in the earth mountains that are firmly fixed therein, lofty and towering high.

    As Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: ( وَجَعَلْنَا فِيهَا رَوَاسِيَ شَامِخَاتٍ ) "and We placed therein firmly anchored, towering mountains", he means the mountains.

    ʿAlī related to me, he said: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, he said: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: ( رَوَاسِيَ شَامِخَاتٍ ) "firmly anchored, towering mountains", he says: high-towering mountains.

    And His word: ( وَأَسْقَيْنَاكُمْ مَاءً فُرَاتًا ) "and We gave you sweet water to drink". He says: and We gave you sweet, pleasant water to drink.

    And in accordance with what we have said about that, the exegetes have spoken.

    ʿAlī related to me, he said: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, he said: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: ( وَأَسْقَيْنَاكُمْ مَاءً فُرَاتًا ) "and We gave you sweet water to drink", he says: pleasant.

    Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to me, he said: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, he said: al-Ḥasan related to us, he said: Waraqāʾ related to us, both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his word: ( مَاءً فُرَاتًا ) "sweet water", he said: pleasant.

    Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: ( وَأَسْقَيْنَاكُمْ مَاءً فُرَاتًا ) "and We gave you sweet water to drink": that is, pleasant water.

    Muḥammad ibn Sinān al-Qazzāz related to us, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, on the authority of Shabīb, on the authority of ʿIkrima, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: ( وَأَسْقَيْنَاكُمْ مَاءً فُرَاتًا ) "and We gave you sweet water to drink", he said: from four rivers: the Sayḥān, the Jayḥān, the Nile, and the Euphrates. And all the water that the son of Adam drinks comes from these rivers, and they flow forth from beneath a rock at Jerusalem. As for the Sayḥān, it is at Balkh; as for the Jayḥān, it is the Tigris; as for the Euphrates, it is the Euphrates of Kūfa; and as for the Nile, it is in Egypt.

    وقوله: ( وَجَعَلْنَا فِيهَا رَوَاسِيَ شَامِخَاتٍ ) يقول تعالى ذكره: وجعلنا في الأرض جبالا ثابتات فيها، باذخات شاهقات. كما حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة ( وَجَعَلْنَا فِيهَا رَوَاسِيَ شَامِخَاتٍ ) يعني الجبال. حدثني عليّ، قال: ثنا أبو صالح، قال: ثني معاوية، عن عليّ، عن ابن عباس، قوله: ( رَوَاسِيَ شَامِخَاتٍ ) يقول: جبالا مشرفات. وقوله: ( وَأَسْقَيْنَاكُمْ مَاءً فُرَاتًا) يقول: وأسقيناكم ماء عذبا. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. * ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني عليّ، قال: ثنا أبو صالح، قال: ثني معاوية، عن عليّ، عن ابن عباس ( وَأَسْقَيْنَاكُمْ مَاءً فُرَاتًا ) يقول: عذبا. حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثني أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى، وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء، جميعا عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد، قوله: ( مَاءً فُرَاتًا ) قال: عذبا. حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة ( وَأَسْقَيْنَاكُمْ مَاءً فُرَاتًا ) : أي ماء عذبا. حدثنا محمد بن سنان القزّاز، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، عن شبيب، عن عكرِمة، عن ابن عباس: ( وَأَسْقَيْنَاكُمْ مَاءً فُرَاتًا) قال: من أربعة أنهار: سيحانَ، وجيحان، &; 24-136 &; والنيلِ، والفراتِ، وكل ماء يشربه ابن آدم، فهو من هذه الأنهار، وهي تخرج من تحت صخرة من عند بيت المقدس، وأما سيحان فهو ببلخ، وأما جيحان فدجلة، وأما الفرات ففرات الكوفة، وأما النيل فهو بمصر.
