Have We not made the earth a container
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
The Exalted, praised be His mention, says, while drawing His servants' attention to His favors toward them: ( a-lam najʿali ) ("have We not made"), O people, ( al-arḍa ) ("the earth") for you ( kifātan ) ("a receptacle"), that is to say: a vessel. One says: "hādhā kafata hādhā" and "kafaytuhu" ("this enclosed this," "I enclosed it"), when it was a vessel for it.
The meaning of the word is only: have We not made the earth a receptacle for your living and your dead — it holds your living in the dwelling-places and abodes, and encompasses and gathers them therein; and your dead in its interior, in the graves, in which they are buried.
