The Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: أَلَمْ نَخْلُقْكُمْ ("Did We not create you"), O mankind, مِنْ مَاءٍ مَهِينٍ ("from a contemptible fluid") — that is to say: from a weak drop of sperm (nuṭfa).
As Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, he said: my father related to me, he said: my uncle related to me, he said: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: أَلَمْ نَخْلُقْكُمْ مِنْ مَاءٍ مَهِينٍ ("Did We not create you from a contemptible fluid"): by "mahīn" (contemptible) is meant: the weak.
