And His word: ( inna hāʾulāʾi yuḥibbūna al-ʿājila ) ("truly, these love the transient") means: the Exalted, praised be His mention, says: truly, these polytheists who ascribe partners to Allah love the transient, that is to say: the worldly life (al-dunyā); He says: they love to remain therein, and its adornment beguiles them. ( wa-yadharūna warāʾahum yawman thaqīlan ) ("and they leave behind them a heavy day") means: and they leave behind their backs the working for the Hereafter, and that in which lies for them the deliverance from the punishment of Allah on that day. Some have explained it in the sense of: and they leave before them a heavy day — and that is not a reprehensible interpretation, except that what we have said accords more with the meaning of the word.
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, he said: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, concerning ( wa-yadharūna warāʾahum yawman thaqīlan ): he said: the Hereafter.
