His statement: وَيُسْقَوْنَ فِيهَا كَأْسًا كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا زَنْجَبِيلا ("And they will be given to drink therein a cup whose mixture is ginger"). The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: and to this righteous people (al-abrār) there will be given to drink in Paradise (janna) a cup (kaʾs). A "cup" is any vessel in which there is a drink; when it is empty of wine, it is not called a "kaʾs," but is merely called a "vessel" (ināʾ) — just as the small dish upon which a gift is offered is called "al-mihdā" (in shortened form) as long as the gift is upon it; but when it is empty of what lay upon it, it is a plate (ṭabaq) or a tray (khiwān), and is no longer a "mihdā." كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا زَنْجَبِيلا ("whose mixture is ginger") means: the mixture of the drink of the cup from which they are given to drink was ginger (zanjabīl).
The exegetes of Scripture (ahl al-taʾwīl) differed concerning the interpretation of this. Some of them said: their drink is mixed for them with ginger.
* Mention of those who said that:
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His statement: مِزَاجُهَا زَنْجَبِيلا ("whose mixture is ginger"), he said: it is mixed with ginger.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid — concerning His statement: كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا زَنْجَبِيلا ("whose mixture is ginger"), he said: He calls to their remembrance what they used to drink in this world. Al-Ḥārith added in his narration: and He makes it beloved to them.
And some of them said: az-zanjabīl is the name of the spring from which the mixture of the drink of the righteous comes.
