Tabari (1 passage)

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

The Exalted, praised be His mention, means by His word ( wa-dāniyatan ʿalayhim ẓilāluhā ) ("and its shadows reach low over them"): and the shadows of its trees have come close to them.

For the accusative of "dāniya" there are several explanations. The first: that in the text it is connected (by coordination, ʿaṭf) with His word muttakiʾīna fīhā ("reclining therein"). The second: that it is connected with the position of His word lā yarawna fīhā shamsan ("they see therein no sun"), because that position stands in the accusative, for the meaning is: reclining therein upon the couches, seeing therein no sun. The third: the accusative on the basis of praise (madḥ), as though it were said: reclining therein upon the couches, and moreover its shadows reach low over them — as one says, "So-and-so has a beautiful slave girl (jāriya), and moreover young and fresh," whereby with this wāw one posits a verb that places "young" in the accusative, when one intends praise by it and not coordination. "Dāniya" was put in the feminine because al-ẓilāl (shadows) is a plural. It is mentioned that in the reading of ʿAbd Allāh it stands in the masculine: ( wa-dāniyan ʿalayhim ẓilāluhā ); and it was put in the masculine because it is a preceding verb. And in one reading — as has been transmitted to me — it stands as: ( wa-dānin ), in the nominative on the basis of a new beginning (istiʾnāf).

And His word: ( wa-dhullilat quṭūfuhā tadhlīlan ) ("and its clusters to be plucked are made compliant") means: and the plucking of the fruit of its trees is made easy for them, however they may wish — sitting, standing, or lying down.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his word: ( wa-dhullilat quṭūfuhā tadhlīlan ): he said: when he stands up, it rises to his height; and when he sits down, it hangs low until he reaches it; and when he lies down, it hangs low until he reaches it — that is its being made compliant.

Bishr related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning his word: ( wa-dāniyatan ʿalayhim ẓilāluhā wa-dhullilat quṭūfuhā tadhlīlan ): he said: no distance and no thorn holds their hands back from it.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning his word quṭūfuhā dāniya ("its clusters to be plucked are near"): he said: al-dāniya is that whose fruits have come close to them.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, concerning ( wa-dhullilat quṭūfuhā tadhlīlan ): he said: he plucks it as he wishes, sitting and lying down.
