Tafseer of The Cloaked One · Al-Muddaththir · 74:12
And to whom I granted extensive wealth

wa-jaʿaltu lahu mālan mamdūdan ("and I gave him extensive wealth"). The exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) differed concerning this wealth that Allah mentioned and reported that He had appointed for the solitary one (al-waḥīd): what was it? And how much did it amount to? Some of them said: it was dīnār coins, amounting to a thousand dīnārs.

Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Wakīʿ related to us, on the authority of Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Mujāhid: wa-jaʿaltu lahu mālan mamdūdan , he said: his wealth was a thousand dīnārs.
Ṣāliḥ ibn Mismār al-Marwazī related to us, saying: al-Ḥārith ibn ʿImrān al-Kūfī related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn Sūqa related to us, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, concerning His word: wa-jaʿaltu lahu mālan mamdūdan , he said: a thousand dīnārs.
And others said: his wealth was four thousand dīnārs.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān: wa-jaʿaltu lahu mālan mamdūdan , he said: it has reached me that it was four thousand dīnārs.
And others said: his wealth was land.

Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Wahb ibn Jarīr related to me, saying: Shuʿba related to us, on the authority of al-Nuʿmān ibn Sālim, concerning His word: wa-jaʿaltu lahu mālan mamdūdan , he said: the land.
Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq al-Ahwāzī related to us, saying: Wahb ibn Jarīr related to us, saying: Shuʿba related to us, on the authority of al-Nuʿmān ibn Sālim, something similar.
And others said: it was a revenue, month after month.

Zakariyyāʾ ibn Yaḥyā ibn Abī Zāʾida related to me, saying: Ḥalbas, the imam of the mosque of Ibn ʿUlayya, related to us, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ, on the authority of ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him), concerning His word: wa-jaʿaltu lahu mālan mamdūdan , he said: a revenue, month after month.
Abū Ḥafṣ al-Ḥīrī related to me, saying: Ḥalbas al-Ḍubaʿī related to us, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ, something similar, but he did not say: "on the authority of ʿUmar".
Aḥmad ibn al-Walīd al-Ramlī related to us, saying: Ghālib ibn Ḥalbas related to us, saying: my father related to us, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ, something similar, but he did not say: "on the authority of ʿUmar".
Aḥmad ibn al-Walīd related to us, saying: Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh related to us, saying: Ḥalbas ibn Muḥammad al-ʿIjlī related to us, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ, on the authority of ʿUmar, something similar.
And the correct judgment concerning this is that one says as Allah has said: wa-jaʿaltu lahu mālan mamdūdan , and that is the abundant, the extensive — whether in number or in measure.
