The explanation of His statement, the Exalted: وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيهُنَا عَلَى اللَّهِ شَطَطًا ( And that our foolish one used to speak excess against Allah )
He, Mighty and Exalted, says, reporting the words of the company of the jinn who listened to the Qurʾān: ( And that our foolish one used to speak ) — and that is Iblīs.
And along the lines of what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: ( And that our foolish one used to speak excess against Allah ) — and that is Iblīs.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of a man from Mecca, on the authority of Mujāhid ( our foolish one excess against Allah ) he said: Iblīs. Then Sufyān said: I have heard that when the human being prostrates himself (in sujūd), Iblīs sits down and weeps, saying: O woe to him, he was commanded to prostrate and he obeyed — so for him is the Fire; and the son of Ādam was commanded to prostrate and he prostrated — so for him is the Garden.
