And His word: (And they plotted a tremendous plot) (71:22). He says: And they plotted an enormous plot.
And in accordance with what we have said about this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) spoke.
* Mention of those who said that:
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word: (kubbāran, tremendous) — he said: enormous.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word: (And they plotted a tremendous plot) (71:22): manifold, like the form of His word: They will hear therein neither vain talk nor falsehood (kidhdhāban). And al-kubbār means al-kabīr (the great), as Ibn Zayd said. The Arabs say: amrun ʿajīb (an astonishing matter) and ʿujāb with softening (without doubling), and ʿujjāb with doubling; and rajulun ḥusān and ḥassān; and jumāl and jammāl, with softening and with doubling; and likewise kabīr and kubbār, with softening and with doubling.
