So We saved him and those with him by mercy from Us. And We eliminated those who denied Our signs, and they were not [at all] believers.

The discourse on the explanation of His statement: فَأَنْجَيْنَاهُ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ بِرَحْمَةٍ مِنَّا وَقَطَعْنَا دَابِرَ الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا وَمَا كَانُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ (7:72) (So We saved him and those who were with him by mercy from Us, and We cut off the last remnant of those who denied Our signs and were not believers.)
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: So We saved Hūd and those who were with him from among his followers in believing in him and affirming him and that to which he called — the oneness of Allah, and the abandonment of the gods and the idols = (by mercy from Us, and We cut off the last remnant of those who denied Our signs), He says: and We destroyed those of the people of Hūd who denied Our proofs, all of them together down to the last of them, and We left none of them remaining, as:-
14809 - Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His statement: (and We cut off the last remnant of those who denied Our signs), he said: We uprooted them down to the root.

And we have already previously clarified the meaning of His statement: فَقُطِعَ دَابِرُ الْقَوْمِ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا [Al-Anʿām: 45] (So the last remnant of the people who did wrong was cut off), with its proofs, in a manner that makes it unnecessary to repeat this.

= (and were not believers), He says: they were not believers in Allah, nor in His messenger Hūd.
