They said, "Have you come to us that we should worship Allah alone and leave what our fathers have worshipped? Then bring us what you promise us, if you should be of the truthful."

The explanation of His word: قَالُوا أَجِئْتَنَا لِنَعْبُدَ اللَّهَ وَحْدَهُ وَنَذَرَ مَا كَانَ يَعْبُدُ آبَاؤُنَا فَأْتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَا إِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصَّادِقِينَ (70) ("They said: Have you come to us that we should worship Allah alone and forsake what our fathers used to worship? Then bring us what you threaten us with, if you are among the truthful") (7:70).
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: ʿĀd said to him (to Hūd): Have you come to us to threaten us with the punishment of Allah on account of the religion upon which we find ourselves, so that we should worship Allah alone, submit ourselves to Him in sincere obedience, and forsake the worship of the gods and idols which our fathers worshipped, and dissociate ourselves from that? Well, we shall not do so, and we shall not follow you in that to which you call us. Then bring us what you threaten us with of punishment and torment on account of our refusal to profess purely the oneness of Allah and on account of our worship of what we worship besides Him of idols, if you are among the people of truth in what you say and threaten.
