The explanation of the saying of Allah: وَنَادَى أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ أَنْ أَفِيضُوا عَلَيْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ أَوْ مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ قَالُوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ حَرَّمَهُمَا عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ (50) (And the inhabitants of the Fire (al-nār) will call out to the inhabitants of the Garden (janna): "Pour out upon us some water, or some of what Allah has provided you as sustenance." They will say: "Indeed, Allah has forbidden both of these to the disbelievers (kāfir)." (50)

Abū Jaʿfar said: This is a report from Allah, exalted is His mention, concerning the cry for help of the inhabitants of the Fire (al-nār) to the inhabitants of the Garden (janna), when the great calamity descends upon them through the severity of thirst and hunger, as a punishment from Allah upon them on account of what they had formerly neglected in this world: the abandonment of obedience to Allah, and of fulfilling what He had prescribed for them in their possessions of the rights of the needy, namely the obligatory alms (zakāh) and voluntary charity.

Allah, exalted is His mention, says: "And the inhabitants of the Fire call out," after they have entered it = "the inhabitants of the Garden," after these have settled into it = "that," O inhabitants of the Garden = "pour out upon us some water, or some of what Allah has provided you as sustenance," that is to say: feed us with some of the food that Allah has provided you as sustenance, as in:

14749 - Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn related to me, saying: Aḥmad ibn al-Mufaḍḍal related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī: "that: pour out upon us some water, or some of what Allah has provided you as sustenance," he said: of the food.

14750 - Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His saying: "that: pour out upon us some water, or some of what Allah has provided you as sustenance," he said: they ask them for food and for drink.

= Thereupon the inhabitants of the Garden answer them: indeed, Allah has forbidden the water and the food to those who have denied His oneness and in this world have rejected His messengers.

And the "hāʾ and mīm" in His saying: "indeed, Allah has forbidden both of these," refer back to "the water" and to the "what" in His saying: "or some of what Allah has provided you as sustenance."

And in such terms have the exegetes spoken.

    Mention of who said that:

14751 - Ibn Wakīʿ related to us, saying: my father related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of ʿUthmān al-Thaqafī, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: "And the inhabitants of the Fire call out to the inhabitants of the Garden: that, pour out upon us some water, or some of what Allah has provided you as sustenance," he said: the man calls out to his brother or his father and says: "I have been burned, pour some water over me!" Then it is said to them: answer them! Whereupon they say: "Indeed, Allah has forbidden both of these to the disbelievers."

14752 - And al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Ibn Dukayn related to us, saying: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of ʿUthmān, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr: "And the inhabitants of the Fire call out to the inhabitants of the Garden: that, pour out upon us some water, or some of what Allah has provided you as sustenance," he said: the man calls out to his brother: O my brother, I have been burned, come to my aid! Whereupon he says: "Indeed, Allah has forbidden both of these to the disbelievers."

14753 - Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His saying: "They said: indeed, Allah has forbidden both of these to the disbelievers," he said: the food of the inhabitants of the Garden and their drink.
