The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: وَيَا آدَمُ اسْكُنْ أَنْتَ وَزَوْجُكَ الْجَنَّةَ فَكُلا مِنْ حَيْثُ شِئْتُمَا وَلا تَقْرَبَا هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ (7:19) ("And O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in the Garden (al-janna) and eat from wherever you both wish, but do not approach this tree, lest you both become among the wrongdoers.")
Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah, the Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: And Allah said to Adam: (O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in the Garden and eat from wherever you both wish). Thus did He, whose praise is exalted, cause Adam and his wife to dwell in the Garden (janna), after He had cast Iblīs down from it and expelled him from it; and He permitted them to eat of its fruits from every place they wished thereof, and He forbade them to approach the fruit of a particular tree.

We have already mentioned the disagreement of the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) concerning this, as well as what we hold to be correct therein, in a place other than this, and we deemed it undesirable to repeat it.

(Lest you both become among the wrongdoers), He says: then you both will become among those who transgress the command of his Lord and do what it is not his to do.
