The explanation of His statement: أَوَلَمْ يَتَفَكَّرُوا مَا بِصَاحِبِهِمْ مِنْ جِنَّةٍ إِنْ هُوَ إِلا نَذِيرٌ مُبِينٌ (184) ("Have they then not reflected? Their companion is not possessed. He is nothing but a clear warner." (184))
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: Have these who have declared Our signs to be lies then not reflected, so that they might consider with their minds and realize that Our messenger whom We have sent to them is not possessed and has no madness (khabal), and that that to which he has invited them is the correct [view], the upright religion, and the manifest truth? This āyah, according to what has been said, was revealed as follows:
15461 - Bishr ibn Muʿādh related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, who said: It was related to us that the Prophet of Allah, Allah's blessing and peace be upon him, stood upon al-Ṣafā and called out to the Quraysh and began to summon them clan by clan: "O children of so-and-so, O children of so-and-so!" And he warned them of the might of Allah and of Allah's punishments. Thereupon one of them said: "This companion of yours is truly possessed! He has been calling out the whole night until the morning — or: until he reached the morning!" Then Allah, blessed and exalted is He, revealed: (Have they then not reflected? Their companion is not possessed. He is nothing but a clear warner.)

By His statement (He is nothing but a clear warner) He means: He is nothing but a warner who warns you of the punishment of Allah for your disbelief in Him, if you do not return to belief in Him.

And by His statement (clear) He means: he has made clear to you, O people, that of which his warning warns you, namely the might of Allah for your disbelief in Him.
