And [mention, O Muhammad], when it was said to them, "Dwell in this city and eat from it wherever you will and say, 'Relieve us of our burdens,' and enter the gate bowing humbly; We will [then] forgive you your sins. We will increase the doers of good [in goodness and reward]."

The statement concerning the explanation of His saying: وَإِذْ قِيلَ لَهُمُ اسْكُنُوا هَذِهِ الْقَرْيَةَ وَكُلُوا مِنْهَا حَيْثُ شِئْتُمْ وَقُولُوا حِطَّةٌ وَادْخُلُوا الْبَابَ سُجَّدًا نَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ خَطِيئَاتِكُمْ سَنَزِيدُ الْمُحْسِنِينَ (161) (And when it was said to them: "Dwell in this town and eat thereof wherever you wish, and say: 'Forgiveness!', and enter the gate prostrating; then We shall forgive you your sins. We shall give the doers of good yet more." (161))
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose praise is sublime, says to His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: Remember also, O Muḥammad, the error in the conduct of this people, their opposition to their Lord, their disobedience to their prophet Moses (peace be upon him), and their alteration of the word that they had been commanded to say, when Allah spoke to them: "Dwell in this town" — and that is the town of Jerusalem (Bayt al-Maqdis) — "and eat thereof", that is to say: eat of its fruits, its grains, and its produce — "wherever you wish", from it, which means: in whatever manner you wish from it — "and say: 'Forgiveness (ḥiṭṭa)'", that is to say: say: this deed is "forgiveness", which casts off our sins — "then We shall forgive you", your Lord will cover over for you — "your sins", which you have previously committed, so that He remits them for you and does not call you to account for them. — "We shall give the doers of good yet more", among you, and they are those who are obedient to Allah, beyond what I have promised you of forgiveness of misdeeds.

We have already mentioned the reports concerning all of this, together with the differences of opinion among those who differed, and the correct view thereon according to us, in what has passed, in a manner that makes it needless to repeat.
