The explanation of His word: قَالَ رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلأَخِي وَأَدْخِلْنَا فِي رَحْمَتِكَ وَأَنْتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ (7:151) (He said: "My Lord, forgive me and my brother, and admit us into Your mercy, for You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.")
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose praise has been mentioned, says: Mūsā said, when his brother's excuse became clear to him and he knew that he had not been negligent in the duty incumbent upon him from the command of Allah, regarding the prevention of what the ignorant ones were doing, namely the worship of the calf: "My Lord, forgive me" — seeking forgiveness for his conduct toward his brother, and for his brother for an earlier shortcoming that had been between him and Allah: cover our sins with a covering from You by which You conceal them = "and admit us into Your mercy," He says: and be merciful toward us with Your mercy that encompasses Your believing servants, for You are more merciful toward Your servants than anyone who shows compassion for anything.
