Tabari

Tafseer of The Heights · Al-A'raaf · 7:141

And [recall, O Children of Israel], when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh, [who were] afflicting you with the worst torment - killing your sons and keeping your women alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

The explanation of the saying of Allah: (141) (And when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh, who imposed upon you the worst punishment, killing your sons and letting your women live; and therein lay a tremendous trial from your Lord. (141))

Abū Jaʿfar said: Allah, exalted is His mention, says to the Jews of the Children of Israel who were dwelling in the midst of the abode to which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had emigrated: remember, alongside this saying of yours which you directed to Mūsā after you had seen the signs and the lessons, and after the favors which had come to you from Me in former times, and the benefactions that preceded — namely what you did — (when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh), and they were those who followed his way and his path in disbelief in Allah, from his people (13) = (who imposed upon you the worst punishment), He says: when they imposed upon you the most hideous and most evil punishment. (14)

And we have already previously explained in this book of ours what the punishment was, the evil of which they imposed upon them. (15)

= (They killed your sons), the male offspring among their children = (and let your women live), He says: they let their female offspring live (16) = (and therein lay a tremendous trial from your Lord), He says: and in their imposing upon you of the worst punishment lay a trial from Allah for you and a tremendous favor. (17)
