The explanation of His word: فَلَمَّا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُمُ الرِّجْزَ إِلَى أَجَلٍ هُمْ بَالِغُوهُ إِذَا هُمْ يَنْكُثُونَ (135) ("But when We removed the plague from them, until a term which they would reach, behold, then they broke their word") (135)
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose praise is proclaimed, says: Mūsā called upon his Lord and He answered him; and when Allah removed from them the punishment which He had sent down upon them — "until a term which they would reach," so that they might complete the punishment of the days which Allah had granted them as an appointed term of life, until the time of their destruction — "behold, then they broke their word," that is to say: behold, then they broke the covenants which they had entered into with their Lord and with Mūsā, and they persisted in their disbelief (kufr) and their misguidance. And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
15040 - Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the word of Allah the Exalted: "until a term which they would reach," he said: an appointed number of their days which was allotted to them.
15041 - Al-Muthannā related to me, saying: Abū Ḥudhayfa related to us, saying: Shibl related to us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, something similar.
15042 - Mūsā ibn Hārūn related to me, saying: ʿAmr ibn Ḥammād related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī: "but when We removed the plague from them, until a term which they would reach, behold, then they broke their word," he said: that which was imposed upon them of covenants; and that is when Allah says: وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْنَا آلَ فِرْعَوْنَ بِالسِّنِينَ ("And indeed, We seized the people of Farʿawn with years of drought"), and that is the famine — وَنَقْصٍ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ ("and with a shortage of fruits, that they might be reminded"), [al-Aʿrāf: 130].
