And His words: ( إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَى الْمَاءُ حَمَلْنَاكُمْ فِي الْجَارِيَةِ ) ("Verily, when the water overflowed its banks, We carried you in the sailing vessel"). He, exalted is His mention, says: Verily, when the water increased and exceeded its known limit, the one fixed for it — and that was the time of the Flood.
And it has been said: it rose and ascended above everything by a measure of fifteen cubits.
* Mention of who said that, and of who said, concerning His words ( طَغَى ) ("overflowed its banks"), something similar to our statement:
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda: ( إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَى الْمَاءُ ), he said: it has reached us that it rose above everything by fifteen cubits.
Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His words: ( إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَى الْمَاءُ حَمَلْنَاكُمْ فِي الْجَارِيَةِ ): that was the time of Nūḥ; the water rose above everything by fifteen cubits, according to the measure of every thing.
Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Yaʿqūb al-Qummī related to us, on the authority of Jaʿfar ibn Abī al-Mughīra, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, concerning His words: ( إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَى الْمَاءُ حَمَلْنَاكُمْ فِي الْجَارِيَةِ ), he said: not a drop descended from the heaven but that it was with the knowledge of the keepers, except where the water overflowed its banks; for it raged on account of the wrath of Allah, and it overflowed its banks past the keepers, so that there came forth what they did not know what it was.
ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His words: ( إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَى الْمَاءُ حَمَلْنَاكُمْ فِي الْجَارِيَةِ ), he says only: when it increased.
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His words: ( إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَى الْمَاءُ ): he means that the water increased in the nights in which Allah drowned the people of Nūḥ.
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His words: ( إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَى الْمَاءُ حَمَلْنَاكُمْ ). Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr said in his transmission: it swelled (ṭamā), and al-Ḥārith said: it appeared at the surface (ẓahara).
It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Faraj, saying: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd related to us, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk, concerning His words: ( لَمَّا طَغَى الْمَاءُ ): it increased and rose.
And His words: ( حَمَلْنَاكُمْ فِي الْجَارِيَةِ ) say: We carried you in the ship that sails upon the water.
And similar to what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have declared.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His words: ( حَمَلْنَاكُمْ فِي الْجَارِيَةِ ): al-jāriya is the ship.
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His words: ( حَمَلْنَاكُمْ فِي الْجَارِيَةِ ): and al-jāriya is the ship of Nūḥ in which you were carried. And it has been said: "We carried you," while He addressed those among whom the Qurʾān was sent down, although only their forefathers, Nūḥ and his children, were carried — because those who were addressed by this were the descendants of those who were carried in the sailing vessel. Thus the carrying of those who were carried therein among the forefathers was a carrying of their progeny, in accordance with what we have expounded concerning comparable cases in many places in this book of ours.
And His words: ( لِنَجْعَلَهَا لَكُمْ تَذْكِرَةً ) ("that We might make it a reminder for you") say: that We might make the sailing ship in which We carried you a reminder for you, that is to say, a lesson and an admonition by which you take heed.
And similar to what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have declared.
