The statement concerning the explanation of His saying, the Exalted: إِنَّا بَلَوْنَاهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَا أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ (17) ("Indeed We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden, when they swore that they would surely harvest it at daybreak") (68:17).
He — exalted be His mention — means by His saying إِنَّا بَلَوْنَاهُمْ ("Indeed We have tried them"): We have tried the polytheists (mushrikīn) of Quraysh. He says: We have tested them and tried them, كَمَا بَلَوْنَا أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ ("as We tried the owners of the garden"). He says: as We tried the owners of the orchard, إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ ("when they swore that they would surely harvest it at daybreak"). He says: when they swore that they would surely harvest its fruits as soon as they came in the morning.
