The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: It — Hell (jahannam) — would almost burst asunder, He says: it nearly becomes torn and ripped to pieces with fury against its inhabitants.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.

    * Mention of those who said that:

ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiya related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: It would almost burst asunder with fury, he says: it becomes torn apart.

Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, saying: my father related to me, saying: my uncle related to me, saying: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: It would almost burst asunder with fury: one part of it nearly separates from the other part, and it bursts apart.

It was related to me, on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, who said: I heard Abū Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd related to us, saying: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning His word: It would almost burst asunder with fury, he says: it becomes torn apart.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word: It would almost burst asunder with fury, he said: the bursting asunder is its tearing itself apart out of fury against the people who disobey Allah, out of wrath for the sake of Allah and out of vengeance for Him.

And His word: Every time a group is cast into it, its keepers ask them, the Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: every time a throng is cast into Hell (jahannam), its keepers ask them: Did no warner come to you? He says: the keepers of Hell (jahannam) ask the group, and they say to them: did no warner come to you in the worldly life who warned you of this punishment in which you now find yourselves?
