وَلَقَدْ زَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِمَصَٰبِيحَ وَجَعَلْنَٰهَا رُجُومًۭا لِّلشَّيَٰطِينِ ۖ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لَهُمْ عَذَابَ ٱلسَّعِيرِ

And We have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with stars and have made [from] them what is thrown at the devils and have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze.

    The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: وَلَقَدْ زَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِمَصَابِيحَ ("And indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with lamps") — and these are the stars. He made them lamps because of their giving light; likewise the dawn (ṣubḥ) is so called because of the light that shines for the people during the day. وَجَعَلْنَاهَا رُجُومًا لِلشَّيَاطِينِ ("and We have made them missiles for the devils"). He says: and We have made the lamps with which We adorned the nearest heaven missiles for the devils, with which they are pelted.

    And Bishr has already related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: وَلَقَدْ زَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِمَصَابِيحَ وَجَعَلْنَاهَا رُجُومًا لِلشَّيَاطِينِ ("And indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with lamps and We have made them missiles for the devils"). Indeed, Allah — exalted is His praise — created these stars only for three properties: He created them as an adornment for the nearest heaven, as missiles for the devils, and as signs by which one finds the way. So whoever interprets anything other than this in them has spoken according to his own opinion, missed his portion, squandered his share, and burdened himself with that of which he has no knowledge.

    And His word: وَأَعْتَدْنَا لَهُمْ عَذَابَ السَّعِيرِ ("and We have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze"). He — exalted is His praise — says: and We have prepared for the devils in the Hereafter the punishment of the Blaze (ʿadhāb al-saʿīr), which is kindled over them and scorches them.

    The statement concerning the interpretation of His word, the Exalted: وَلِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِرَبِّهِمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ (6) إِذَا أُلْقُوا فِيهَا سَمِعُوا لَهَا شَهِيقًا وَهِيَ تَفُورُ (7) ("And for those who disbelieve in their Lord is the punishment of Hell (jahannam), and wretched is the destination (6). When they are cast into it, they hear from it a braying, while it boils over (7)").

    يقول تعالى ذكره: (وَلَقَدْ زَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِمَصَابِيحَ ) وهي النجوم، وجعلها مصابيح لإضاءتها، وكذلك الصبح إنما قيل له صبح للضوء الذي يضئ للناس من النهار (وَجَعَلْنَاهَا رُجُومًا لِلشَّيَاطِينِ ) يقول: وجعلنا المصابيح التي زيَّنا بها السماء الدنيا رجوما للشياطين تُرْجم بها. وقد حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة (وَلَقَدْ زَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِمَصَابِيحَ وَجَعَلْنَاهَا رُجُومًا لِلشَّيَاطِينِ ) إن الله جلّ ثناؤه إنما خلق هذه النجوم لثلاث خصال: خلقها زينة للسماء الدنيا، ورجومًا للشياطين، وعلامات يهتدي بها ؛ فمن يتأوّل منها غير ذلك، فقد قال برأيه، وأخطأ حظه، وأضاع نصيبه، وتكلَّف ما لا علم له به. وقوله: (وَأَعْتَدْنَا لَهُمْ عَذَابَ السَّعِيرِ ) يقول جلّ ثناؤه: وأعتدنا للشياطين في الآخرة عذاب السعير، تُسْعَر عليهم فتُسْجَر. القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : وَلِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِرَبِّهِمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ (6) إِذَا أُلْقُوا فِيهَا سَمِعُوا لَهَا شَهِيقًا وَهِيَ تَفُورُ (7)
