    The word concerning the explanation of His statement, the Exalted:

The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says to the polytheists (mushrikīn) among the Quraysh who ascribe partners to Him: who is it that is for you an army that helps you apart from the All-Merciful, if He intends evil against you, and that wards off from you what He intends thereof against you? The disbelievers are only in delusion, the Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: the disbelievers in Allah are only in delusion through their supposition that their gods bring them nearer to Allah, and that those benefit or harm.

    The word concerning the explanation of His statement, the Exalted:

The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: or who is it that feeds you and gives you to drink, and brings you provisions, if He withholds from you His provision, with which He provides you?

And His statement: Nay, they persist in insolence and aversion, he says: nay, they continued in tyranny and aversion from the truth and arrogance.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, he said: my father related to me, he said: my paternal uncle related to me, he said: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His statement: Nay, they persist in insolence and aversion, he says: in error.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, he said: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, he said: al-Ḥasan related to us, he said: Warqāʾ related to us — all on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning Allah's statement: Nay, they persist in insolence and aversion, he said: disbelief.

    The word concerning the explanation of His statement, the Exalted:
