Tafseer of Divorce · At-Talaaq · 65:7

Let a man of wealth spend from his wealth, and he whose provision is restricted - let him spend from what Allah has given him. Allah does not charge a soul except [according to] what He has given it. Allah will bring about, after hardship, ease.

Muḥammad related to us, saying: Aḥmad related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, concerning His word: Let him who has abundance spend according to his abundant means, he said: out of the abundance of what he possesses. He said: And whoever's provision is restricted, he said: for whom his provision has been made straitened.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān: Let him who has abundance spend according to his abundant means, he says: according to his capacity.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word: Let him who has abundance spend according to his abundant means, and whoever's provision is restricted, let him spend from what Allah has given him, he said: He made it obligatory upon her according to the measure of what he finds.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to me — all on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid: Let him who has abundance spend according to his abundant means, he said: for the benefit of the divorced woman when she nurses for him.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Ḥakkām related to us, on the authority of Abū Sinān, he said: ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, may Allah be pleased with him, inquired about Abū ʿUbayda, and he was told: he wears coarse clothing and eats the roughest food. So he sent him a thousand dīnār, and he said to the messenger: see what he does when he accepts them. It was not long before he was wearing the softest clothing and eating the most delicious food. The messenger returned and informed him of this, whereupon he — may Allah have mercy upon him — said: he has explained this verse: Let him who has abundance spend according to his abundant means, and whoever's provision is restricted, let him spend from what Allah has given him.

And His word: Allah does not burden any soul except with what He has given it.

He says: Allah does not burden anyone with maintenance for the one whose maintenance rests upon him by reason of kinship and blood relation, except with what He has given him. If he has abundance, then according to his abundant means; and if his provision is restricted, then from what Allah has given him of provision, according to the measure of his capacity. The poor man is not burdened with the maintenance of the rich man, and none of His creatures is burdened except with the obligation that He has imposed upon him.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes have spoken.

    * Mention of who said that:

Muḥammad related to us, saying: Aḥmad related to us, saying: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, concerning His word: Allah does not burden any soul except with what He has given it, he said: he says: the poor man is not burdened as the rich man is burdened.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad al-Zuhrī related to us, saying: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Hushaym: Allah does not burden any soul except with what He has given it, he said: except with what He has imposed upon it as a duty.

Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān: Allah does not burden any soul except with what He has given it, he says: except with what it is able to bear.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word: Allah does not burden any soul except with what He has given it, he said: Allah does not burden him with giving charity while he possesses nothing to give, and Allah does not burden him with paying the zakāh (the obligatory alms) while he possesses nothing to discharge.
