The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says to the polytheists (mushrikīn) of Quraysh: Has there not come to you, O people, the tidings of those who disbelieved before you? Such were, for example, the people of Nūḥ, and ʿĀd, and Thamūd, and the people of Ibrāhīm, and the people of Lūṭ. Fa-dhāqū wabāla amrihim (So they tasted the evil consequences of their conduct), that is to say: the punishment (ʿadhāb) of Allah struck them because of their disbelief (kufr). Wa-lahum ʿadhābun alīm (And for them there is a painful punishment), that is to say: and for them there is a painful, tormenting punishment on the Day of Resurrection in the fire of hell (jahannam), on top of that which Allah has already made them taste in the worldly life of the evil consequences of their disbelief (kufr).
