Tabari

Tafseer of The Ranks · As-Saff · 61:9

It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although those who associate others with Allah dislike it.

Tabari (1 passage)

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

He, exalted be His mention, says: Allah is the One who sent His Messenger Muḥammad ﷺ with guidance and the religion of truth — He means: with the exposition of the truth; and "the religion of truth" means: with the religion of Allah, and that is Islam.

And His saying: لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ ("that He might make it prevail over all religion"). He says: that He might make His true religion, with which He sent His Messenger, prevail over every religion other than this, and that will be at the descent of ʿĪsā, the son of Maryam, and when the community becomes one, so that there will be no religion other than Islam.

As Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, saying: Mihrān related to us, on the authority of Sufyān, on the authority of Abū l-Miqdām Thābit ibn Hurmuz, on the authority of Abū Hurayra, [concerning] لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ ("that He might make it prevail over all religion"), he said: the appearance of ʿĪsā, the son of Maryam. And we have already mentioned the disagreement of those who differed concerning the meaning of His saying لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ , and the correct judgment concerning it in our view, with its grounds, in what preceded, in a manner that absolves us from repeating it in this place.

And ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Jaʿfar related to me, saying: al-Aswad ibn al-ʿAlāʾ related to us, on the authority of Abū Salama ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, on the authority of ʿĀʾisha, she said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: "The night and the day will not pass away until al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā are worshipped again." Then ʿĀʾisha said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I truly thought, when Allah sent down هُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُ بِالْهُدَى وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ ("He is the One who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, that He might make it prevail over all religion") ... the [rest of the] verse, that this would come to pass completely. Then he said: "Indeed, of that there shall come to pass what Allah wills; then Allah will send a good wind, which will take away everyone in whose heart there is the weight of a mustard seed of goodness, so that there remains only the one who has no goodness in him, and they will return to the religion of their forefathers."
