The explanation of His word: قُلِ اللَّهُ يُنَجِّيكُمْ مِنْهَا وَمِنْ كُلِّ كَرْبٍ ثُمَّ أَنْتُمْ تُشْرِكُونَ (Say: Allah delivers you from it and from every distress; and yet you ascribe partners to Him) (6:64).
Abū Jaʿfar said: The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says to His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: Say to these who set up other deities as equals to Him alongside their Lord, when you question them about whom they call upon for help when distress descends upon them, on land and on sea: it is Allah who has the power to grant you relief when distress strikes you; He delivers you from the terrible calamity that descends upon you on land and on sea — from the fear of going astray and the dread of perishing — and from every distress and care besides that. Not your deities that you ascribe to Him in His worship, and not your idols that you worship alongside Him, which can bring you neither benefit nor harm. Then, after He has favored you by removing the distress that descended upon you and averting the terrible care that struck you, you set up your deities and idols as equals to Him, and you ascribe partnership to them in your worship of Him. And that, on your part, is ignorance of the right that is due to Him from you, and ingratitude for His blessings toward you, and a provoking of the hastening down upon you of His punishment.
