His saying: ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ شَاقُّوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ("That is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger") — the Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: this which Allah has done to these Jews — expelling them from their dwellings, casting terror into their hearts before the believers, and preparing for them in the Hereafter the punishment of the Fire — is on account of what they did in this worldly life: their opposition to Allah and His Messenger in His command and His prohibition, and their disobedience to their Lord regarding that which He commanded them, namely the following of Muḥammad — may Allah bless him and grant him peace. وَمَنْ يُشَاقِّ اللَّهَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ شَدِيدُ الْعِقَابِ ("and whoever opposes Allah, then indeed Allah is severe in punishment") — the Exalted, whose remembrance is exalted, says: and whoever opposes Allah in His command and His prohibition, then indeed Allah is severe in punishment.
